Declutter Like A Mother™ is my big annual challenge and it’s so fun. Every year we have tens of thousands of women sign up to simplify their homes.
I’m going to walk you through decluttering some main areas of your house – all for FREE. I just ask that you declutter for 30 minutes a day for 2 weeks.
We start January 1st, so sign up now and invite your friends to do it with you!
Mom life. We are surrounded with the message that it’s the tired life. The no-time-for-myself life. The hard life. And while it is hard and full of lots of servitude, the idea that motherhood means a joyless life is something I am passionate about putting a stop to. I’m on a mission to help you stop counting down the minutes till bedtime, at least most days. I want you to stop cleaning up after your kid’s childhood and start being present for it. Start enjoying it. I believe in John 10:10 “that we are called to abundant life” and I know mothers are not excluded from that promise. Join me in conversations about simplicity, minimalism and lots of other good stuff that leads to a life of less for the sake of enjoying more in your motherhood. I’m Allie Casazza and this is The Purpose Show.
Hi, sweet friends! Oh my gosh, Merry Christmas! I hope you guys had an amazing holiday with your families!
I wanted to share a quick, funny disclosure before I dive into what I wanted to say to you today. I have hit record on this super short intro four times because my kids are super wild and being loud in the hallway. And the last time I hit record, I should have just saved the file and shared it with you guys. But I deleted it without thinking. I said, “Hey guys! Merry Christmas,” and then I hear in the hallway, “Oh, gross! That fart smells like eggs!”
That is what is going on in my house right now. The boys have a ton of energy and they’re home right now, so recording this podcast is hard sometimes. Anyway, I am putting this episode out today, even though it is not a Wednesday. It is not a normal episode release day because it’s December 26, and I always say that the day after Christmas is the best day of the entire year to declutter your kids’ stuff, especially their toys.
And that’s what I do. I want to help you with that because I think it’s important. It goes so far beyond having a clean house or having less to do. It’s about the way that you want to raise your kids, and raising good humans that aren’t used to being super entitled, having way too many options, way too many toys to play with, being overstimulated all the time, being materialistic. It’s about creating an atmosphere that invites you and your family to create memories and not just collect things. There’s so much more I can say, but I’ll stop there.
You might recognize the title of this episode because I actually released the episode you’re about to hear last year on this same day. It’s really a super short little pep talk and I’ve decided that I’m going to release it every year on the day after Christmas just to give you guys some encouragement and guiding steps on this important day. Take advantage of this day because it really is the best day of the year to declutter your kids’ stuff.
Also, I want to invite you guys before we get into it, go to the show notes for this episode or even just forget that. Go to alliecasazza.com/kidsclass. There is a free class there that I hosted with Amy Tirpak. She is a child play therapist. We have a course together. We did this live webinar together earlier this year and I wanted to open it up again for viewing. It’s been removed from the internet completely, honestly, since we did it live, but I found the file and I put it on a page for you guys. I want to invite you to watch it. If your kids are playing this morning, you’re lying low and just hanging out, or you want to watch it while you declutter some of the stuff, it is there for you.
It is about the ‘why’ behind decluttering your kids’ stuff, and a lot of how-to go about this conversation with them if they’re having a hard time understanding. There’s also a special discount on the full course about raising uncluttered kids and talking to your kids about all of this. It’s loaded. But the free class alone is super helpful.
I wanted to make that available to you guys today because it is a special day. allicasazza.com/kidsclass. That’ll get you to that class, but enjoy this little pep talk and let’s get into it.
Why is this the best decluttering day of the year? First of all, the kids are home from school and they’re super wrapped up in their new toys and games. So basically, go girl, go! Of course you should declutter! This is a great day. Kids are super busy with their new stuff which is awesome.
The next reason it’s the best day to declutter of the whole year is because your kids just got a bunch of new stuff. Even if they didn’t get a bunch because your family was super onboard with simplifying (great!), they got some new things so they’re much less attached to their older things. They’re much more willing to give things up, let things go, move on and say, “Mom, I’m ready to donate this. I don’t really need this toy. I got this new one. I love it more.”
Let’s do this! This is a great day to declutter!
I want you all to take action on this. Oh, I wish it wasn’t the day after the most major holiday, but it just works out that way and it just is. It’s just the best day. And I think everyone should take advantage of it.
If you’re listening to this, on the day this episode is launching, I am currently decluttering. I always declutter my kids’ stuff the day after Christmas. Let’s talk about that and the kids’ toys. How do you declutter your kid’s toys the day after Christmas?
First of all, make sure that you make it exciting. This is not a punishment. This is not a burden. This is not a chore. Your kids want to chill. They just had Christmas, they’re super excited. Maybe you guys are going to visit family and doing Christmas with them today after your original Christmas Day Christmas and you guys have stuff going on. Your kids are really excited. You don’t want to make this crap for them.
Make it exciting. Just say like, “Guys, you got so much great stuff! You have so many good things. What are you ready to let go of so we can make room for this stuff, because I want you guys to play with all this stuff. What is not cool anymore? Don’t word it like that, but make it good. Make it like, “Hey guys, just wondering. You’ve got all this great new stuff and to make room for it let’s each pick some things that we can get rid of because you guys got blessed with such awesome new stuff.” Come at it with that attitude.
Don’t come at it like, “All right, the fun is over. Everyone get up, get your crap together. We’re cleaning.” Don’t make it like that.
Friends, if you haven’t heard already, it is almost time for another round of Declutter Like A Mother. Declutter Like A Mother is my annual challenge. We’ve done it for years. I think this is our fourth time and it’s so fun. It’s really big. Everyone waits for it. We get loads and loads and tens of thousands of sign-ups every time. It’s really, really cool to see so many women working toward the same thing that you’re working toward, all at the same time. It is a free challenge and I love running it.
This year is actually the first year that it looks a little bit different. I’ve made a lot of changes to make the challenge give you the best results possible.
It’s not as long this time. It’s not as overwhelming this time. We’ve really simplified this simplicity challenge.
Sign up! You just go to alliecasazza.com/DLAM. You can sign up. Again, it’s free!
We are starting January 1st and you’ve gotta be there! You don’t want to miss any of it. Go sign up! Totally free! I can’t wait to see you there!
Another great thing to purge the day after Christmas is your stuff. What’s been bothering you? What’s been feeling really cluttered that you can knock out while you’re in the zone today?
Remember to make piles: keep, trash, and donate. There is no “don’t forget to give this to Aunt Mary pile.” There is no “well, maybe, I’m not sure” pile. There’s is just “keep, trash, donate.” Make the decisions.
This is a great day to clear the holiday decor clutter too. I don’t know if everyone feels like this, but we’ve talked about this on Instagram before and it seemed like everybody was pretty on board. Most people feel ready to ditch the holiday decor and move on and into the New Year.
The holidays can be super fun but they can also be like, “I want to get back to my usual.” So, clear the holiday decor clutter, get that spring cleaning feeling and prepare to head into the New Year with a fresh start.
That’s what I wanted to say. Just a few-minute pep talk on why this is the best day to declutter of the entire year, how to go about it with the right attitude, and the areas to really focus on – mainly the kids’ toys.
When I say this is the best day to declutter of the whole year, I’m really talking about your kids’ stuff because they are just way more on board, way more into it. You can get in the zone and get ready to head into the New Year fresh.
Speaking of the New Year, Declutter Like A Mother is coming back! If you guys have been around for a bit, you may have been here for one before. This is going to be our, I think it’s our 5th time around, but our 3rd annual Declutter Like A Mother challenge.
We used to do it more than once a year. Now it’s an annual thing. January 1st we start!
Because it isn’t about clutter. It’s not about having a clean house. It’s not about perfectionism. It is about the fact that what takes up your space takes up your time and we want to say ‘no’ to that.
We want to take that back into our hands. We want to get intentional with that and go into the New Year with a clearer motherhood, with more time to spend on our kids, and play with them. Pour into them. Help them with their homework and homeschool them if that’s what you do. Cook meals for your family. Spend time with your hubby. Have date night. And not be nagging and stressed out all the time about all there is to do because that’s what clutter does for you.
I adore you guys! Go have an awesome day!
