I promised I’d walk you through something that would shift things for you in real time, so that’s what this is. Get comfortable. You can close your eyes or just soften your gaze while you read. We’re going to do this one together.
Free class: If you keep starting over, come to Stop Starting Over: 5 Steps to Becoming the Woman Who Follows Through.
Try this with me right now
Think about something you want. Something meaningful that would move your life forward, but you keep hesitating on it. Maybe it’s becoming the kind of woman who goes to the gym. Maybe it’s a new level with money, or something in a relationship. Pick one and picture it in front of you.
Now imagine taking one step toward it. Then another, until you’re so close it feels like, “Oh. This is mine. It’s right here. This is finally going to happen.”
Pause there.
Notice what shows up
When you get that close, notice what happens in your body. Notice the thoughts that appear. A lot of the time they’re so normal for you that you don’t even label them as unhelpful. It might be a quick, fleeting little thought like:
- “I’m going to mess this up.”
- “This isn’t going to stick.”
- “What if this goes wrong?”
That’s what we’re looking for. It’s subtle, because we’re activating the pattern live. And your subconscious mind can’t tell the difference between imagination and reality, so doing this is literally teaching your brain a new way of relating to the thing you want.
Ask a different question
This is the moment where your brain usually asks, “Is this safe?” I want you to ask something completely different instead:
What version of me would naturally live this life?
The version of you whose brain is already good with this. Already safe with it. For her, this is just who she is. Picture her:
- How does she think about herself?
- What does she believe is possible?
- How does she make decisions?
- How does she handle the hiccups in her day?
- What are her standards?
- What does she do in the moment doubt shows up?
Feel her for a minute. Connect with her.
She’s already part of you
You would not be able to see what you just saw and feel what you just felt if she wasn’t already a part of you. And what we just did starts to make her normal to your brain. That’s huge.
This is the shift most people never make. They try to force the old version of themselves into a new life. Usually by getting super structured and routined. Sometimes they even take the spiritual practices or the neuroscience tools and make those rigid too, and they just go through the steps trying to get what they want.
It’s all different versions of the same thing: forcing the old you into a new life.
You don’t need more force. You need to become the woman who already lives it.
