Mom life. We are surrounded with the message that it’s the tired life. The no-time-for-myself life. The hard life. And while it is hard and full of lots of servitude, the idea that motherhood means a joyless life is something I am passionate about putting a stop to.  I’m on a mission to help you stop counting down the minutes till bedtime, at least most days.  I want you to stop cleaning up after your kid’s childhood and start being present for it.  Start enjoying it. I believe in John 10:10 “that we are called to abundant life” and i know mothers are not excluded from that promise. Join me in conversations about simplicity, minimalism and lots of other good stuff that leads to a life of less for the sake of enjoying more in your motherhood.  I’m Allie Casazza and this is the The Purpose Show.

ALLIE: Hey Friends! Welcome to The Purpose Show! This episode is a fun one! I’m sitting here with my husband, Brian, and we did a fun little questionnaire a while back. Today is actually my 31st birthday and it’s new episode day. We thought we would take this opportunity to do something fun and let you guys get to know me a little bit better. I have been getting a lot of messages and emails asking random things about me. It felt like this was wanted, but of course, if you don’t care, I don’t blame you one bit and you can skip this episode.

We let people submit their answers via Instagram on a Google Form and there was lots and lots of input. We had someone go through and pull the ones that were asked the most often.

Brian, you ask the questions and I will answer them.

BRIAN: What is your favorite ice cream brand or flavor?

ALLIE: Ben and Jerry’s. What’s the one with brownies and cookies?  It’s got the raw chunks of brownie and cookie dough, chocolate and vanilla. I have to take two Lactaids before I can eat it? That one.

BRIAN: What is your personality type? Myers-Briggs or Enneagram?

ALLIE: Myers-Briggs I believe is ISTJ and I’m an eight on the Enneagram. We just did that one together.

BRAIN: How many tattoos and piercings do you have? Do you regret any of them?

ALLIE: This question makes me sound like Kat Von D, the tattoo ink girl. I had a nose ring and Bella ripped it out when she was a baby. That was fun. I have my ears pierced, but that’s it for piercings. Hmm…tattoos. {counting} I have four tattoos and just my ears pierced.

And do you regret any of them? No, definitely not.

BRIAN: They all meant something.

ALLIE: Yeah. They are all very special and they mean something.

BRIAN: How do you take your coffee when you’re out and what do you do to your coffee at home? It always looks frothy and delicious.

ALLIE: When I’m out I will either get it black or with a splash of cream. Right now, I’m in a splash of cream phase. At home, same thing. If I do put cream in it, I get raw, unpasteurized, unhomogenized milk from a local natural shop. I put a little bit of that in it. It looks frothy and delicious because we have an espresso machine and it’s amazing. It makes espresso and coffee. I drink coffee. You’re the one that likes espresso.

BRIAN: Yeah. If you could trade places and have one of your kids be you and you be one of them, who would you choose? If you picked one of the kids and then switched?

ALLIE: I think Hudson. I am the oldest so I wouldn’t switch with Bella because I know what it’s like to be an oldest girl. I think Hudson because…I don’t know. I feel like out of everybody, he’s the one that I have a hard time understanding and he’s the “Middle Kid”. There really is no middle for us, but he has the traits and personality, the stereotypes of a middle child. I feel like I would want to have a deeper understanding of why he is the way that he is.

BRIAN: What is one aspect of your life you would never share with us or your fans?

ALLIE: My fans? What my tattoos mean. What? I won’t. It’s personal and special. It is a map of the innermost feelings of my life. I like having it be private.

BRIAN: What is your “go to” sing your heart out song?

ALLIE: I have several. It is hard to think of because I really like music. I have songs for every time of my life that have been really special to me and that I love singing to in the car and stuff. I would probably say over the last couple of years, and that has been sung to the most (especially with the kids in the car) would be Taylor Swift’s “All You Had To Do Was Stay.” I know all the words to that one in my “singing range.” Don’t be annoyed. I know you’re sick of it. All the kids love it. It’s so cute when they sing it. That’s my go-to. If I was even by myself on a drive and I needed to have a good “sing”, I would put that on. I guess that’s my answer.

BRIAN: What is your hidden talent?

ALLIE: Oh crap.

BRIAN: You’re good at a lot of things but you don’t have one weird special talent.

ALLIE: It’s not really a talent but I am fluent in sign language.

BRAIN: Yeah. No one knows that. Remember I saw you talk to someone once that needed help.

ALLIE: But then they started going super fast and signing like a psychopath when I couldn’t keep up. But I am fluent. I just don’t use it very much.

BRIAN: I would say that not too many people can do that though. Sometimes I forget that you can do that. It’s a hidden talent.

ALLIE: We’ll just go with that because I don’t know anything else.

BRIAN: Do you plan on growing your family any bigger?

ALLIE: Yes. Yes, we do. Skip it, go on to the next one!

BRIAN: What do you typically eat in a day?

ALLIE: I am not a breakfast person. I like breakfast foods but I am not a big “starving in the morning person.” I will have a health bar or something, which it’s getting harder and harder to find good ones that don’t have crap in them. Or I like a smoothie. Or an egg with coffee. You will sometimes make me breakfast if I have a busy day and I am getting ready for the day, but I don’t like to eat it very much. And lunch…salad, chicken breasts and veggies. A turkey protein plate with deli meat, a little slice of cheese, fruit. And dinner… it’s different. It depends because we eat out sometimes. We eat traditional cooking, healthy.

BRIAN: You only get one outfit for date night to wear for the rest of the year. What do you choose?

ALLIE: Black skinny jeans, high-waisted, with a flowy black top tucked in, my Lottas, and Statement earrings. That was very specific but I knew what my answer was.

BRIAN: If you were stranded on an island, what three books would you want? These are the books you are going to have for the rest of your life. What kinds of books would you have like that?

ALLIE: First of all, Streams In The Desert. I think I’ve read that book enough to last me a lifetime. On A Desert Island, that devotional book that I always read in the morning, for sure. I know it’s not a real “devotional” but that’s what I would definitely want to have with me. Jane Austen for sure. Sense and Sensibility. It would be a nice escape from my terrible life on a desert island by myself. This is awkward because all of my favorite books are self-help and that’s not really going to get me anywhere. Maybe the book on mindset. I don’t like fiction very much. Of course, I would pick Wuthering Heights.

BRIAN: What is the story of your family origin? Your parents look so young and it seems you have a lot of siblings.

ALLIE: My story? My parents look so young? That’s just because they have amazing genes and I hope that I go those ones. My parents are from Cuba. My dad legit came over here on a little boat with his parents and brother when he was 3. My parents look really young because they have great genes. They weren’t teen parents if that’s what you’re getting at. They got married after high school and had me three years later. I don’t have a lot of siblings; I am the oldest of four. My brother, Seth, is 3 ½ years younger than me. My sister, Emma is 10 years younger than me. My brother, Caleb, is 14 years younger than me. We are definitely spread apart. My parents are still married and they’re super cute together.

BRIAN: If you were on death row, what would be your last meal? I guess it could have been less awkward and asked, What was your favorite cheat meal?

ALLIE: That was an amazing question. Cheeseburger, fries, and a Coke Classic. I’m very American.

BRIAN: What are your favorite TV shows?

ALLIE: I Love Lucy. Always. I was raised on it. I watch it weekly. The Office. Parks and Recreation. Friends. I really like Superstore. That’s probably it.

BRIAN: If money, space, kids, weren’t a factor, what is something you would totally and irrationally splurge on?

ALLIE: I am not sure if this is along the lines of what people are thinking? I would have somebody come every night and take care of my skin. A facial. A person that comes in and gives me a full-on facial and does whatever they should do to my skin to make it amazing and shiny every day.

BRIAN: Wow! Which country would you most like to visit?

ALLIE: Definitely somewhere in Europe.

BRIAN: I know we have talked about places that we want to go, but what’s your most wanted to visit?

ALLIE: I am going to be annoying and give two things, even though it’s supposed to be one. I would like to visit Cuba to see where my family is from. But I also really want to go to Italy really badly. Definitely number one.

BRIAN: What is your most embarrassing moment?

ALLIE: Falling over in college. I was walking from the door to my seat and I fell over and my dress came all the way up. That was humbling.

BRIAN: Glad I wasn’t in that class. {laughing}

ALLIE: We were already married.  Second most embarrassing moment…were we even dating yet? We were in high school. We were at the beach and that wave basically knocked me unconscious and I stood up and my boob was out. That was embarrassing and you saved me. You hadn’t even seen it because we weren’t married. Also, I’m sorry I said “boob”. Hopefully, your guys’ kids aren’t around.

BRIAN: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

ALLIE: When I was super little, I wanted to be a teacher. Then when I got a bit older, mid-childhood, I wanted to be a writer. That never left.

BRIAN: What book from your childhood did you love the most? Or which one had the biggest impact?

ALLIE: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Also, this is kind of random, but the Disney movie, Snow White, was never my favorite, but reading the traditional story of Snow White…There was something about the way that the story was told and the aspects of storytelling in that book that made me want to be a writer. That was another one too.

BRIAN: As a kid, did you go to school or were you homeschooled?

ALLIE: I went to private school. I was homeschooled for one year, almost out of necessity.

BRIAN: Same thing with me. What’s your favorite wine?

ALLIE: Sauvignon Blanc. I am not going to say a specific brand, but that’s my favorite type of wine. Wine is my least favorite alcohol, though. I will drink it, but I’m more of a beer girl.

BRIAN: If you could have dinner with three people, dead or alive, who would they be?

ALLIE: That’s another one that’s hard to come up with off the top of my head. Lucille Ball. That’s an obvious one. Jane Austen. Yes, that would be amazing. Although I feel like she’d be a dull dud. The more I learn about her, her personality and life – she was a very good writer, but maybe there would have been a lot of awkward silences that I would be trying to fill. I would say Steve Carell, Lucille Ball. I wanted to say Chris Farley, but all three of those people are comedians. Leah Remini from King of Queens

BRIAN: You like funny shows, though. You never watch anything else. What’s your favorite movie of all time?

ALLIE: The version of Sense & Sensibility with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet. I could watch it over and over and over again. The part at the end where Edward proposes? I love that movie.

BRIAN: How tall are you?

ALLIE: 5’ 7”.

BRIAN: If you had to pick between only wearing mascara for a year or only wearing lipstick, which would you pick?

ALLIE: Mascara. Lipstick is new for me, I didn’t used to wear it. I have small eyes. I am a master at making my eyes look bigger than they area. And mascara is part of that.

BRIAN: What are you currently reading?

ALLIE: Ego Is the Enemy by Ryan Holiday. At the time of this recording anyway. I am sure by the time this airs I’ll be reading something else.

BRIAN: What’s your favorite spot in your house? That’s a tough one.

ALLIE: No, it’s not. The front room, with the navy sofa. It’s my morning ritual time and it’s special to me because of that. It’s really pretty.

BRIAN: What is one thing you must do every day to feel accomplished?

ALLIE: Um, that’s a hard one. Probably put on a bra. I don’t know; there’s something about lifting the girls up where they belong that makes me feel “I did good today.”

BRIAN: Wait, you’re still talking about the same thing?

ALLIE: Yeah, I’m talking about the bra. If I don’t get dressed at all, even putting a bra on and I still get a bunch of stuff done, I still feel like, “who am I?” OK Fine. I’ll get another answer. Get the kids’ homeschooling done. If we did a bunch of work stuff, but we didn’t do that, it still feels like, “dang it.”

BRIAN: What’s your guilty pleasure?

ALLIE: This question feels weird and dirty. In terms of what? Peanut M&M’s. And that I am watch Grey’s Anatomy.

BRIAN: What is your favorite scent?

ALLIE: Lemon. Always lemon.

BRIAN: What is your pet peeve?

ALLIE: I have several. Let’s think of them together. When people have an air freshener in their car and they put the paper on it still hanging from their rearview mirror, halfway open, like that’s controlling the scent.

BRIAN: You know, I think it says you’re supposed to do that, but that feels so dumb.

ALLIE: Just why, though? I can’t. Why are you doing that? When people don’t chew with their mouth closed and they make noise when they chew. I’m lookin’ at you babe. Right at you. When people drag their feet when they walk. Do your legs work? Pick your feet up. Your driving, not just bad drivers, your driving is my pet peeve.

BRIAN: Who is your style inspiration?

ALLIE: Jennifer Anniston. Super simple. Low-key. Perfect.

BRIAN: Would you rather drive or fly for vacation?

ALLIE: Drive. Drive. 100%. First of all, why are you shocked? We road-tripped together. I would rather drive than fly, because flying sucks. You have to get in the plane. You’re stuck next to somebody. You can’t do what you want. I would rather drive for sure.

BRIAN: If you weren’t running your amazing business, what do you think you’d be doing if you had to have a career?

ALLIE: If I have to have a career? Probably a flower-shop thing. I would love to have my own flower shop.

BRIAN: What’s your go-to for some “me time?”

ALLIE: Being alone. I know that’s probably the definition of “me time” but some people like to go and be with other people. My go-to is to leave the house, go to the Super Target by our house. They have a Starbucks in there. Get a tea or coffee. Put music or podcasts in my ears with headphones. Walk through and veg out.

BRIAN: Remember when we were dating and you would go to the beach and walk the beach alone? You like that long, walk, quiet time.

ALLIE: Now it is too long of a drive, with the kids and stuff, but, yeah, second best.

BRIAN: Did you always want to homeschool? Or is it something you fell into later in life?

ALLIE: Fell into. I didn’t think about it that much when I was younger. It just happened and worked out for us.

BRIAN: What was your childhood like?

ALLIE: Good. Happy. Pretty normal. Growing up in a 90’s childhood. Lots of rollerblading until it got dark. Watching One Saturday Morning. I played softball pretty much my entire life. I did a lot of dance, ballet, jazz, and modern dance. I was really active and involved. It was good and very happy. I did good in school but I did have to work hard for it. I had my one best friend growing up the entire time. I had some friends in school, but Juliet was always my friend from when I was 7 all the way through, even though she didn’t go to my school.

BRIAN: What is one favorite event or memory from your childhood.

ALLIE: The first thing that popped into my head… My parents owned their own businesses. The work that they did was in a city called Anaheim, which is where Disneyland is. We lived, and live now, about 45 minutes from there. Because the work that they did was in Anaheim, they wanted their business address to also be in the same city so clients wouldn’t think “Oh I’m not going to hire this person because they live really far from me.” So, they had their PO Box in Anaheim, which meant that every few days my dad would have to drive down to check the mail. It was my favorite thing in the world when he would invite me to go with him. We would get in the green truck (remember the green truck that I drove when you initially loved me?) We would get in the green truck and get fast food, a Coke. We would listen to music. That’s when I first started to really love music and driving. We would just listen to music and talk. It was so fun. It was a really good thing that happened my entire childhood.

BRIAN: That’s pretty cool. That’s the last one.

ALLIE: Thanks for doing this with me, baby.

BRIAN: No problem.

ALLIE: Thank you guys for asking your questions. This was a super fun birthday. Now I’m 31 too! Brian turns the same age as me, three weeks (or something like that) before me. So, now we’re both 31. Happy Birthday to me!

Thanks guys! I hope this was fun!
