Mom life. We’re surrounded by the message that it’s the tired life. The no-time-for-myself life. The hard life. We’re supposed to get through it. Survive. Cling on by the last little thread. And at the same time, Carpe Diem—enjoy every moment because it’s going to go by so fast. The typical mom culture that sends us all kinds of mixed, typically negative messages. We shouldn’t take care of ourselves; it’s selfish. The more ragged you run yourself, the bigger your badge of honor. But also, ditch your mom bod and work out. Don’t yell. Make more money. Show up. Be better, but not at the expense of time with your kids. I am putting a hard stop to all of this. While being a mom, running a business, and whatever else you might have going on is hard, it is a lot and there’s lots of giving of yourself, the idea that motherhood means living a joyless, nonstop-hustle-with-zero-balance kind of life, where you give and give and give and never take, needs to stop.

I’m on a mission to help you stop counting down the minutes till bedtime (at least most days). Stop the mom guilt and shame game. Stop cleaning up after your kids’ childhood and start being present for it. I want to help you thrive in work, home and life. I believe in John 10:10 that we are called to living an abundant life and I know moms are not excluded from that promise. Join me in conversations about simplicity, some business and life hacks, spirituality and lots of other good stuff that leads to a life of less for the sake of enjoying more in your motherhood. I’m Allie Casazza and this is The Purpose Show.

Hey friends! Welcome back to The Purpose Show podcast.

We’re going to make this one as quick as possible. This is a tool for your toolkit and I really want to make it short so you can come back and listen to this anytime you want and know you can get right to the point.

I have been thinking a lot about New Years. I’m recording this in February and I know that you’re listening to it later than I’m recording it, but I have been thinking about New Year’s because everybody this year had that magical, fresh start feeling that a lot of us get when we’re on the brink of a New Year.

I think everyone had it way extra than normal because of how 2020 was. There were more posts than ever before about fresh starts and a new year. Everybody was all about soaking up that new, fresh start feeling.

New Year’s Eve is my favorite day of the year. I don’t know if you guys know that, but it really is. It has been pretty much my entire life. I look forward to it more than my birthday and more than Christmas.

I love New Year’s Eve. I love getting reflective. I love being alone with my thoughts. I have never gone to a New Year’s Eve party.

When I was a kid we used to have a New Year’s Eve party. My parents would host two or three family friends. All the kids would come over. All the parents would come over, hang out, have a good time, and all the kids would play.

Even as a young, young kid—I must’ve been eight or nine—and all throughout high school, I would go out on the curb by myself for an hour at least. I would just sit out there, look up at the sky, get reflective, spend time with myself and with God and just think. Sometimes I would make goals, but most of the time I just thought about the last year and the coming year.

I just love the energy of that fresh start and that reflectiveness you can get on a day like that, you know? I’ve always been like that. I love a good, fresh start and what it can bring.

We all saw the memes and the comments putting all of this pressure on 2021. Then 2021 started and it started off rough. People were like, “Oh, this sucks.”

There were all these funny memes saying things like, “2021, go back where you came from.” And “Nevermind, I’ve seen the seven day trial and I want to return my order.”

You guys probably know what I think about things like that. I think it’s negative and putting all this pressure like life is happening at you. We’re all in control of how we respond to things and in control of so much more than that as well.

But I’ve been thinking a lot about the fresh start and how so many of us have Fresh Start Syndrome. Start the New Thing We’re Doing on Monday Syndrome. New Year’s Syndrome.

It’s so much pressure. I feel like what we really need to hear right now is that you can have a fresh start literally anytime you want. And it can be as big as New Year’s Eve in 2020. It can have that much power behind it. It’s really up to you.

This is something that I want to give you as a tool for your motherhood toolkit. It’s going to make your life so much better and so much brighter. Anytime you need it, you can pull it out and use it. I’m going to teach you how to bottle up that feeling of New Year’s Eve so you can open it any time you want and experience a fresh start whenever you need it.

It’s super simple. It’s a game changer. This is something that I have done for the last couple of years and have definitely been doing a lot this year.

Here’s the thing I want you to understand: there is nothing special about New Year’s Eve. It is literally just a date. January 1st is only what it is because of the energy that you put behind it.

Outside of you and your energy, it is just a day. It is literally just a day on the calendar. Nothing else. If there were no calendars and we didn’t do things this way, then it would literally be nothing.

Let’s sit with that for a minute. To me, that’s a realization. There’s all this buildup and hullabaloo over literally just another day.

The sun still rises the same. Everything is the same. Then everyone’s all butt hurt when it’s not magical and there are still things that feel very 2020 lingering in the beginning of 2021.

Yeah, there’s a problem in our world that needs to work itself out, and big things need to change. The date on the frigging calendar that we made up doesn’t do anything to fix it.

Think about that feeling we all get before a Monday. Before a fresh week. Before the first of the month. Or that magical time when the first of the month is on a Monday. Or New Year’s Eve, especially New Year’s Eve 2020. The brink of a fresh start.

The only thing that makes that a thing is the energy you put behind it. Which means (empowerment moment): you are in charge of getting that feeling and you can get that feeling any time you want.

Here’s how we’re going to do this. This is almost like meditation. I want you to treat it like that. If you need to pause this and listen at another time, that’s totally good with me. Do what you need to do.

This is something that I want you to be able to pull out anytime you need it, so maybe mark in the episode where I’m starting to do this and you can come back to it any time and use this as a meditation.

I want you to get really still for a moment. Close your eyes. Just take a couple of slow, deep breaths. And I want you to imagine New Year’s Eve. I want you to imagine that feeling of being on the brink of a fresh start. I want you to get all into the feelings of that fresh start.

Imagine the feeling of letting go of what has not been serving you, releasing the past, releasing a year full of all kinds of things—both good and bad. Imagine letting it go and looking ahead at what’s on the horizon. That beautiful, fresh start.

Get into those positive feelings. Imagine it. Walk through it in your mind as if it’s real right now. As if you are on that brink of a fresh start right now. Feel the excitement. Sit with the feelings of your hopes and dreams for this coming time, this coming year. Imagine it as if it’s real right now.

Then I want you to imagine bottling up that feeling. Imagine a bottle. It can be any color you want. Imagine yourself walking over and picking up that big bottle with both your hands and imagine yourself scooping up that fresh start energy, that fresh start feeling.

Scoop it all up like liquid. It goes right into the bottle. I want you to put a cork or a lid on the top of that bottle. And I want you to see yourself labeling that bottle “Fresh start.” You can put “Fresh Start Feelings,” “Fresh Start Energy.” Whatever feels best to you.

And I want you to put it away. You can imagine yourself shrinking it down and putting it in your pocket, putting it in your heart, putting it in your brain, putting it on a shelf in your house. Whatever feels best for you.

And I want you to know that any time you have a bad day. Any time you feel like you’ve really screwed up. Any time you just feel like you need that fresh start feeling and you find yourself wishing it was going to be Monday tomorrow or it was going to be New Year’s Eve or that you could just start over.

I want you to realize that you have everything you need inside yourself to pull out that energy and give yourself that fresh start any frigging time. It doesn’t even have to be the start of a new day. It can be the middle of a day, any day of the year, right after a meltdown, whenever.

It is all up to you. It is your choice. It is your energy that makes January 1st what it is. It is your energy that makes a fresh start powerful.

So, decide that as the controller of your day and the CEO of your life, which is what we’re always talking about, you can decide to pull out that bottle of Fresh Start Energy and pour it over the top of your head like sweet, refreshing water anytime you want.

It’s endless. It will not run out. It is all up to you.

This is a visual meditation. These kinds of things really help me and so I’m sharing it with you. I made this up for myself.

But if that doesn’t serve you, then just don’t do the meditation and just remember this kick-in-the-butt reminder from Allie: I can make my own fresh start anytime I want.

It can be the middle of the day. It can be right after I just yelled at my kids. It can be right after a fight with my spouse. It can be right after I just body shamed myself and I need to get myself in order, stop, and hit reset. It can be after anything, before anything. Literally any time.

It could be the middle of the night when you wake up and you can’t sleep because you just feel like crap about yourself and where your life is headed and you just need to hit the reset button and start over.

You can do this anytime you want. You don’t even need a meditation. You don’t need the imaginary bottle. You just need to decide that it’s time for a fresh start.

You just need to decide and put that energy behind it. Put that January 1st energy behind any friggin moment you want. You are in control.

This is so empowering. This is such great news! Because it’s up to us.

It’s not up to the calendar. Any old Tuesday or Thursday, midday, after the worst moment you’ve had in a while can be January 1st vibes. That is such good news to me!

Let’s stop giving up our power and putting it on a calendar that was invented by some dude a really long time ago that basically holds no meaning and is just a measuring tool for us and realize that we’re in charge.

We can create that energy, that feeling. We create our own energy. Nobody can come and take that from us.

A calendar, a piece of paper, a measuring system cannot tell us what our energy is. Other people cannot tell us what our energy is. No one can come in and change that we are in charge.

If you need Fresh Start Energy, give yourself the gift of Fresh Start Energy for Pete’s sake. It’s already yours. You can choose.
